Norman Oakes

It is with much sadness that the council announces the death of Norman Oakes who served as a parish councillor for 4½ years before being obliged to retire some 18 months ago due to his declining health.

As a long serving trustee and committee member for Foxearth Village Hall Charitable Trust Norman was always ready to serve his local community by undertaking any task that might be needed and of course we would always see him at our door this time of year as he, ably assisted by his wife Pam, employed his considerable charm and powers of persuasion to extract those bottles and cans of food and drink in order to populate the tombola stall at the annual village fete.

Norman was a keen gardener and loved his allotment and will be missed by his many friends with whom he would socialise while tending his vegetables. Norman also loved traditional jazz and would invite his friends and neighbours to join him on his regular trips to jazz nights.

But what Norman loved most was his family. It will be of some comfort to them to know that Norman enjoyed a good quality of life despite his illness, almost to the end. He will be sorely missed by them and by his community as a whole.

As one member of our community so succinctly put it, Norman was a lovely guy.

Norman’s funeral will take place on Friday 7th June 2011 at St Peter & St Paul Church Foxearth starting at 1:30pm
