Foxearth History Society – Visit to Pentlow Tower

About 18 members of the District Society enjoyed a rare treat when they came to Pentlow Tower on the evening of 12th July. This well-known folly- in the grounds of a private house – is not generally open to the public but at the special invitation of the owner, Paul Fenwick, the Society was able to inspect the edifice and learn of its history.

The 95ft tower was erected in 1859 by a former incumbent of Pentlow, Rev. Edward Bull, in memory of his parents Rev John and Mrs Margaret Bull “on a spot that they loved so well” The tower underwent some restoration in 2006. It is an octagonal structure of red brick with designs in black. Windows in the side light the oak spiral staircase; a majority of the members scaled the 114 steps to reach the summit from where the view was described in past times as embracing 60 windmills, 41 churches, a couple of castles and several estates. No one present at the visit actually attempted a count (it was a little too misty) but for certain the number of windmills has been drastically reduced! We are extremely grateful to Paul for conducting us around and for allowing the Society access on this occasion.

Next Meeting: Tuesday 9th August – Visit to Bletchley Park – Home of the Code-breakers during WW2. Places still available.
